Stavern, the old naval harbour
Stavern was called Fredriksvern until 1930, after the naval station and galley yard that moved here around 1758, and the fort on Citadelløya and its powder tower still dominate the view from the harbour. Stavern itself has some of the listed boats, among them a cabin cruiser for longer family trips and a small RIB. More are up the fjord in Larvik, west in Nevlunghavn and Helgeroa, and east at Hem and in Sandefjord.
Two short trips start at the harbour mouth: - Svenner, a lighthouse island some 2 nautical miles out, where you can moor at Nordbogen, Røvika or Fyrhavna, along the rock or at the quay. Eiders and gulls nest there from April to June, and the bird life has been protected since 1935. - Rakke, smooth rocks for swimming about 3 km south of the town, used as a military firing range until 2002.
The run west to Nevlunghavn appears among our Stavern-area boat routes.
Inside Stavern harbour the limit is 5 knots. Stavern gjestehavn, with 200 berths in the town centre, is Larvik's largest guest harbour. Svenner faces the Skagerrak, so avoid entering its harbours in strong wind.
