Renting a boat near Hem, at the head of Hemskilen
Hem is a small built-up area in Larvik, about 12 km east of Larvik centre along county road 303. It lies west of Hemskilen, an arm of Sandefjordsfjorden on the border with Sandefjord. The inner part of Hemskilen is a nature reserve of 335 decares, most of it brackish and salt water, where waterbirds breed and ducks, waders and geese rest on migration.
The boat shown on this page is not at Hem. Its owner says it lies on the water in Færder municipality, near Borgheim, about 20 km to the north-east. It is a 21 ft RIB for up to twelve with a 150 hp outboard and a chart plotter, and the owner can come along as skipper at extra cost.
From the mouth of Hemskilen, Sandefjordsfjorden leads out past the islets of Hellesøya and Buerøya; our Larvik, Stavern and Sandefjord guide lists both as public islets with toilets.
