Larvik and the Larviksfjord

Larvik's listed boats sit at private berths along the coast rather than in one marina. Larvik Havn owns the boat harbour at Hølen at the mouth of Numedalslågen, where an open boat shown here is kept. The rest are spread from Sandefjord in the east, through Hem and Stavern, to Nevlunghavn and Helgeroa in the west, and the choice is mainly open boats plus some cabin cruisers.

The Larviksfjord runs 7 km from the town down to the line between Stavernsodden lighthouse and Malmøya, with Numedalslågen and the Farris river flowing into its head. Malmøya is Larvik's largest saltwater island and a state-secured recreation area throughout, with public moorings for small boats in Trabukta on the north side in summer, toilets and barbecue sites. Give the ferries room. From the terminal on Revet, ships sail to Hirtshals in Denmark twice a day, and Larvik is Norway's largest ferry port for freight. Inside the harbour basin 8 knots is the maximum, while the inner harbour, Numedalslågen and Hølen harbour are 5-knot zones.
