Nevlunghavn, Vestfold's outpost on the Skagerrak
Nevlunghavn, known locally simply as Havna, sits on the outermost point of Brunlanes, where Vestfold meets the Langesundsfjord and the open Skagerrak. Pilots and fishermen settled here in the late 1600s, and the harbour bay is sheltered by the Bramskjæra skerries. A small open boat is kept in the village; the others are next door in Helgeroa, in Stavern and Larvik, including at Hølen boat harbour, and across the Langesundsfjord in Porsgrunn, Stathelle and Brevik.
Omrestranda, at the head of the harbour bay, is a shallow sandy beach, and Oddane Sand is close by. Coming in from the west you pass Humlesekken, a skerry carrying a glacial boulder that looks ready to roll into the sea; legend says a giant threw it from Jomfruland. Larvik allows up to 30 knots out towards the baseline, but only 5 knots in the 100 m band next to the shore and around islands and skerries.
