Langesund, where Grenland meets the Skagerrak
Langesund is Bamble's administrative centre, a town of white wooden houses on a peninsula west of the fjord mouth. It was a customs post from 1570, and in the 1580s it was Norway's largest timber-export port. The boats shown here come from up the fjord, from Porsgrunn, Skien, Brevik, Stathelle and Herre, or from Helgeroa and Nevlunghavn to the west.
For a visit, the town has three guest harbours: Langesund gjestehavn in the centre, which cannot be booked in advance, Kongshavn with the service building, and Langøya gjestehavn on the island across the sound. Langøya has sandy beaches, lime-loving plants protected as a landscape area, and the Langøytangen lighthouse from 1839. Rognstranda, west of town, is a long, shallow sandy beach. Beyond the fjord mouth the Skagerrak begins. Near the shore, Grenland's port rules allow no more than 5 knots inside 100 m.
