Helgeroa, in the lee of Mølen

Helgeroa is the old pilot village on the Brunlanes coast of Larvik, facing the Langesundsfjord. Its harbour sits on the north side of Mølen, the great shingle spit of the Ra moraine, which shelters it from the Skagerrak. A seaworthy open boat is kept in Helgeroa itself. The rest are further along the coast in Nevlunghavn, Stavern and Larvik, or across the fjord in Porsgrunn, Stathelle and Brevik.

The village is also a place to come back to. Helgeroa gjestehavn is one of Larvik's three municipal guest harbours, with fuel, showers and a kiosk. Mølen itself is covered in Bronze and Iron Age burial cairns, and more than 300 bird species have been recorded there. A short hop east is Nevlunghavn, sheltered by the Bramskjæra skerries, with the Tvistein lighthouse standing off the coast to the south. Mind the birds. Mølen is a bird sanctuary on the water too, and in the Fugløyrogn nature reserve between the tip of Mølen and Fugløya, landing and passing through by boat are banned from 15 April to 15 July. In Helgeroa harbour the limit is 5 knots.
