Frequently asked questions
Where is the best place to charter a yacht in Spain?
Do I need a licence to charter a boat in Spain?
When is the best time for a yacht charter in Spain?
Where can you charter a yacht in Spain?
Spain has charter yachts on two seas and in three groups of islands, and this page lists them all together. Most of them are in the Balearic Islands.
In Mallorca, the largest of the Balearics, the yachts sail from Palma de Mallorca, Can Pastilla, Andratx, Port de Pollença, Cala d'Or and El Arenal. On Ibiza, the bases are Ibiza town, Sant Antoni de Portmany and Santa Eulària des Riu, and on Menorca you start from Mahón.
On the mainland, Catalonia has bases in Palamós and Roses on the Costa Brava, in El Masnou and Barcelona, and in Sitges just south of the city. Further south are Valencia and Dènia. On the Atlantic, there are yachts in Vigo and Baiona in Galicia and in San Fernando on the Bay of Cádiz in Andalusia. In the Canary Islands, most are on Tenerife, in San Miguel de Abona, Radazul, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Galletas, with more in Las Palmas on Gran Canaria and Arrecife on Lanzarote.
Balearics, mainland or Canary Islands?
The Balearics are the classic Spanish charter: short hops between coves with turquoise water, and a season from about May to October; see yacht charter in Mallorca and yacht charter in Ibiza. Formentera lies just south of Ibiza, and Menorca is a day's sail from the north of Mallorca. The Costa Brava has rocky coves and small harbours close to the French border, and from Dènia you can reach Ibiza in a long day's sail. Galicia is Atlantic sailing in the sheltered rías, with the Cíes Islands off Vigo and Baiona. The Canary Islands are the year-round choice, with trade winds and ocean swell; see yacht charter in Tenerife.
Do you need a licence to charter a yacht in Spain?
Yes. To sail bareboat in Spain, you need a licence that is recognised for the size of the boat and the sailing area. For visitors from the EU and EEA, that is usually their home licence, within its limits, and the charter companies often ask for an ICC as well. From 1 October 2026, even small rental motorboats need at least a basic licence. If you have no licence, book a skipper; some yachts also come fully crewed. Most charters run Saturday to Saturday. More destinations: the Mediterranean and France.
