Baiona: yachts inside the Monterreal fortress
All the boats on this page sail from the Monte Real Club de Yates, whose marina lies inside the walls of the 14th-century Monterreal fortress on the headland, the same enclosure that holds the parador. It has 222 berths with water and power for boats from 4 to 40 m, and the marina is open round the clock. The fleet is mostly sailing yachts for a week's cruise, from a 24-footer that can be taken for a single day up to a 72 ft yacht, plus a catamaran.
Baiona was the first town in Europe to hear of Columbus's discovery of America, when the caravel Pinta put in here in 1493. From the club, the Cíes Islands are a little over 5 nautical miles away across the mouth of the Ría de Vigo, and closer in you look out on the small Estelas islands, Monteferro and the beaches of Panxón and Playa América. Our Rías Baixas and Cíes itinerary plans a week north to Ons and the Ría de Arousa.
Sort out the park paperwork before heading for the Cíes: under Law 15/2002 both navigating and anchoring in the waters of the Atlantic Islands national park need written authorisation.
