Frequently asked questions
Where do I charter a yacht in Ibiza?
How far is it from Ibiza to Formentera by boat?
Where can I anchor around Ibiza and Formentera?
Do I need a licence to charter a boat in Ibiza?
Where do Ibiza yacht charters start?
The yachts on this page sail from three places. In Ibiza town, on the south-east coast, the bases are Marina Ibiza, Marina Botafoch, the Club Náutico and Talamanca Bay just north-east of the harbour. Sant Antoni de Portmany lies in a wide bay on the west coast, famous for its sunsets, and Santa Eulària des Riu is the marina on the east coast, a good start for the northern coves.
Formentera, Espalmador and Es Vedrà: what is worth a visit?
Formentera and the islet of Espalmador are only a short hop south of Ibiza town, across the Es Freus channel. Both are part of the Ses Salines natural park, known for white sand and clear water. The seabed around them is covered in Posidonia seagrass, which is protected throughout the Balearics: anchoring on it is banned, so drop the anchor on sand or use the mooring buoys. Off the south-west coast rises the rock island of Es Vedrà, and the north coast has quieter coves such as Portinatx and Cala Xarraca. In July and August the popular anchorages fill up early.
Bareboat or with a skipper in Ibiza?
Most charters run by the week, Saturday to Saturday. For bareboat you need a licence recognised in Spain for the boat's size and the area; EU and EEA visitors can usually use their home licence within its limits, and many charter companies ask for an ICC. From 1 October 2026, even a small rental motorboat needs at least a basic licence. Otherwise, book a skipper or a crewed yacht. See also Mallorca, all of Spain and the Mediterranean.
