Søreidgrend: between Nordåsvannet and Grimstadfjorden
Søreidgrend belongs to Søreide in Ytrebygda, the borough south-west of Bergen centre that was split off from Fana in 1990. The neighbourhood sits between two very different waters: the sheltered, tidal basin of Nordåsvannet on one side and Grimstadfjorden, an arm of Raunefjorden just north of Bergen Airport Flesland, on the other.
A boat is kept in Søreidgrend itself; the others are listed by private owners at Søreide and Straume nearby, further south at Hjellestad and in Fana, out on Bildøyna and in central Bergen. The list is mostly bowriders, open boats, RIBs and cabin cruisers, alongside a few sailboats.
Southbound is the obvious direction. Out of Grimstadfjorden you meet Raunefjorden, the 15 km stretch between Sotra and the Bergen side, and can follow it down to Hjellestad on the Milde peninsula, an area known for sailing, paddling and a wide skerry garden. Watch for the ferry that leaves Hjellestad quay for Klokkarvik on Sotra, calling at Bjelkarøyna and Lerøyna on the way.
Further south still is Lysøen, the island once owned by the violinist Ole Bull. Our Bergen by boat guide gives the distance from Hjellestad and what to see there.
