Sogndal at the head of Sogndalsfjorden
Sogndal's centre, Sogndalsfjøra, lies where the Sogndalsdalen valley meets Sogndalsfjorden, a 21 km arm on the north side of the Sognefjord. Based here are a small open boat with a fishing rod aboard, a large RIB for up to 14, and a fast day boat that only goes out with its own skipper, who offers trips as far as the Nærøyfjord, Gudvangen, Flåm, Balestrand and Fjærland. On the way out, the fjord narrows to under a kilometre at the shallow sill between Nornes and Fimreite. The narrow point at Nornes is hard to pass in the dark, which is why a light was put up there.
