Renting a boat in Flåm: light fjord boats at the head of the Aurlandsfjord

Flåm lies at the very end of the Aurlandsfjord, where the Flåm Railway comes down from Myrdal. The boats listed here are light boats based in Flåm itself, with room for four to six adults and a 25 hp engine. According to the owner, that means no boat licence is needed, though the minimum age is 18, and the hulls can be run up on the shore for a break.

Some 11 km from the Aurlandsfjord's mouth the fjord forks, and the Nærøyfjord runs 17 km south-west to Gudvangen. It belongs to the West Norwegian Fjord Landscape World Heritage Site, listed in 2005, and at Bakka it narrows to 250 m, with only about 11 m of water over the sill. Our Sognefjord guide puts Flåm to Gudvangen at about 15 nautical miles. Flåm is also a major cruise port, so expect big ships at the quay in summer.
