Renting a boat in Øystese: into Fyksesund from the Hardangerfjord

Øystese is a village in Kvam on the north shore of the Hardangerfjord, 7 km east of Norheimsund. The river Øysteseelva runs through it, with the Ørredalsfossen waterfall, and the name probably comes from the Old Norse Eistvesvin, a holy place of worship.

A day cruiser is based here, with a wakeboard included in the rent.

The obvious short trip is east into Fyksesund, a 10.5 km arm of the Hardangerfjord whose mouth lies just north of the island of Kvamsøy. About 2 km in, the road crosses on the Fyksesundbrua, a 1937 suspension bridge with 28 m clearance. Further in, the fjord narrows to about 300 m at Mjåsund, and the inner part is walled by very steep, high mountainsides. For longer routes, see our Hardangerfjord guide.
