Strandebarm, down the fjord from Norheimsund
Strandebarm, also called Bru or Ploganes, is a village on the Hardangerfjord in Kvam, about 13 km south-west of Tørvikbygd. It was the centre of its own municipality from 1838 to 1965, and the name combines strand with the Old Norse barmr, here meaning a bay. No boats are listed in Strandebarm itself. The nearest are up the fjord in Kvam, a sailing yacht in Norheimsund and a day cruiser in Øystese, plus a small aluminium boat at Eikelandsosen in Bjørnafjorden.
Kysnesstranda lies about 10 km across the fjord, and Oma, a small shipbuilding village that builds catamarans, is 6 km to the south. Varaldsøy, at 45.4 km² the largest island in the Hardangerfjord, belonged to Strandebarm until 1902. Our Hardangerfjord guide has routes from Norheimsund and from Husnes, further down the fjord.
