Øvre Ervik and Eidsvågen: renting a boat
At the head of Eidsvågen, the bay off Byfjorden in Bergen's Åsane borough, lies the small neighbourhood of Ervik, bordered by Åstveit, Eidsvåg and Jordal. Its old manor, Erviken hovedgård, has a main house from 1732, and about 40 decares of its park have been protected since 1984.
Nobody rents out a boat from Ervik itself; the owners listed here keep theirs around the northern fjords: across Byfjorden at Florvåg and other spots on Askøy, at Hordvik further north in Åsane, in Indre Arna, at Frekhaug on Holsnøy and in Alver, plus several in central Bergen. There are sailboats, cabin cruisers, a bowrider and an open boat, and some trips come with the owner as skipper.
Two local 5-knot zones start close by: in Eidsvågen, inside the line from Eidsvågsvåg to Åstveit, and in Åstveitvågen just north of it.
Out in the fjord, the natural direction is north. Past Salhus, Salhusfjorden runs about 4 km under the 1.6 km Nordhordland bridge to Hordvikneset, where it splits into Osterfjorden and Sørfjorden. Further on, Alverstraumen by Alversund is a narrow tidal strait where the current can run too hard for a small boat; our guide to Bergen day trips explains when to pass.
