Renting a boat near Norrtälje: from Spillersboda towards Furusund
Norrtälje town lies at the head of Norrtäljeviken, a 20 km inlet of the Sea of Åland in the northern Stockholm archipelago. The sailing yacht on this page is not in town but at Spillersboda in Frötuna, an archipelago village that went from fishing and farming through the steamboat and guest-house era; scheduled Vaxholm boats called here until the late 1940s. Its owner describes the base as about 4 nautical miles inside Furusund, with a bus stop, parking, fuel and a village shop by the harbour.
Furusund, between Yxlan and Eknö, has an old natural harbour in Ålandsviken. Above the yellow pavilions at the guest harbour, a 24-point compass rose cut into the rock is thought to date from 1463 and is the oldest in the Nordic countries.
Take care in the Furusund strait itself: it carries the Furusundsleden, the northern main fairway into Stockholm's harbours, with a channel depth of 8 m and heavy traffic.
