Ingarö and the Kolström sound
Ingarö is an island of just over 62 km² in Värmdö municipality, the 18th largest in Sweden. The narrow sound of Kolström separates it from Värmdö to the north, and along its southern side runs Ingaröfjärden, part of the fairway from Nämdöfjärden in towards Baggensfjärden and Stockholm.
Most listed boats are not on the island but a short drive away in Gustavsberg, Saltsjöbaden, Lännersta, Nacka and Stockholm, with others at Bullandö, Skarpö and Tyresö. RIBs, bowriders and day cruisers are well represented, and some sailboats can be booked with the owner as skipper.
Kolström is the shortcut between Ingarö and Värmdö, crossed by the Ingarö bridge. It is used mostly by motorboats: the chart shows no more than 1.6 m at its shallowest, so only small sailboats with a shallow keel and a short mast can motor through.
On the island's south-east corner lies Björnö nature reserve, 949 hectares, 316 of them land, bought by the Archipelago Foundation in 1981. It has several bathing places, meadows where camping is allowed and a lookout tower at Småängsuddarna facing Nämdöfjärden. The run from Saltsjöbaden to Björnö and on to Nämdö appears as route 5 in Sandhamn and Värmdö by boat.
