Nacka's sounds: from Saltsjön to Baggensstäket
Nacka's rental boats are privately owned and spread across Stockholm's inner archipelago, with berths at Lännersta, Velamsund, Saltsjöbaden, Tyresö and Ingarö as well as many in Stockholm itself. Nacka's coastline is a string of narrow sounds, and the speed limit changes several times on the way out.
Going east from the city you pass Skurusundet, where part of the sound is 5 knots and the rest 8 knots, then Duvnäsviken at 12 knots and Lännerstasundet at 8 knots. Then comes Baggensstäket, the passage between Lännerstasundet and Baggensfjärden. At Knapens hål it is barely 20 m wide, draught is limited, and the limit is 5 knots from Gammeludden to Boo fyr. A memorial stone recalls the Swedish troops who turned back a Russian fleet here in 1719.
Velamsund nature reserve covers 694 ha in eastern Boo, 75 ha of it water, with a beach at Velamsundsbadet; Velamsundsviken is an 8-knot bay. Past Baggensstäket the Värmdö side of the archipelago begins, and our Sandhamn and Värmdö guide follows that route to the open sea.
Worth knowing before you plan a lake trip instead: motorboats are banned on most of Nacka's lakes, electric motors excepted, so the boats here are for the sea.
