Løding on Tverlandet, next to Saltstraumen
Løding, also called Tverlandet, is a suburb of Bodø about 13 km east of the city centre in a straight line. A day boat is based here on a fixed berth on Tverlandet, and by its owner's reckoning Saltstraumen is only a short run away. An open boat lies at Skivika harbour further west.
Saltstraumen is a sound about 2.2 km long and only 150 m wide at its narrowest. Four times a day the tide forces water through it to fill or empty Skjerstadfjorden. The current normally runs at 10–12 knots, can reach about 20, and is strongest just after new and full moon. Plan with the Saltstraumen table, not an ordinary tide table: it gives the times of strongest current, about three hours apart from high and low water.
