Renting a boat in Volos: questions and answers

What does it cost to rent a boat in Volos?

Charter yachts cost from €960 per week, typically €2,850 per week (134 yachts with a price). Prices vary by date and season, and each boat shows the exact price for your dates.

Can I rent a boat with a skipper in Volos?

Yes. 20 of the 135 boats on this page can be rented with a skipper or captain, so nobody in your group has to drive.

How many people can come along on a rental boat in Volos?

The largest boat here takes up to 14 people, and a typical boat takes 10.

Do I need a boat licence in Greece?

Not for a small motorboat: in Greece an outboard of up to 30 hp is licence-free on a conventional hull, but only up to 15 hp on a RIB or V-hull. To charter a yacht bareboat the skipper needs a recognised licence, and the ICC is the safest choice; with a hired skipper nobody on board needs one. Read our full licence guide.

Why start a Sporades charter in Volos?

The Pagasetic Gulf is almost enclosed, so the first and last days of the week are sailed in calm, protected water. It is a gentle start for a first charter in Greece and a good choice for families.

Once through the Trikeri channel, the Sporades open up: Skiathos first, then Skopelos and Alonissos. Distances between the islands are short, so there is time for swimming stops every day.

A week in the Sporades

A typical week runs Volos – Pelion coast – Skiathos – Skopelos – Alonissos and back. Alonissos is home to the National Marine Park of Alonissos and the Northern Sporades, one of the last refuges of the Mediterranean monk seal. Anchoring and fishing rules apply in the park, so check them before you go.

Wind and season

The Sporades lie further from the meltemi's strongest belt than the Cyclades, and the gulf is sheltered. The season runs from April to October; June and September are the pleasant, quieter months.

Getting there and booking

Volos has a small airport at Nea Anchialos with summer flights. Most visitors fly into Athens or Thessaloniki and continue by car or bus. Most boats are chartered by the week, Saturday to Saturday. For a bareboat charter, the skipper needs a recognised licence such as the ICC. See all yacht charters in Greece.

Volos: a sailing base for the Sporades

Volos sits at the head of the Pagasetic Gulf, at the foot of Mount Pelion, and the charter yachts are moored in the town's own port rather than in a separate marina. It is a working harbour, the third-largest cargo port in Greece, with ferries and hydrofoils leaving daily for Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos, so keep a lookout as you leave the quay.

The fleet is almost entirely sailing yachts and catamarans on Saturday-to-Saturday weeks, and some can be booked with a skipper.

The first hours are spent inside the gulf, a sheltered basin of 175 km² whose only way out to the Aegean is a channel about 4 km wide near Trikeri. Beyond it lie Skiathos, just east of Pelion, with more than 60 mostly sandy beaches, then Skopelos and Alonissos.

Around Alonissos is the National Marine Park of Alonissos Northern Sporades, founded in 1992 to protect the Mediterranean monk seal. In its strictly protected Zone A, mooring and fishing are prohibited, so check the zone map before choosing an anchorage. Our Sporades itinerary from Volos plans the week harbour by harbour.
