Every boat listed for Skiathos starts on the island itself, from the harbour of Skiathos town. It is a sailing base first: monohulls outnumber the few catamarans, and charters run by the week. Skiathos is the westernmost of the Northern Sporades, just east of the Pelion peninsula, and its airport sits on the island's north-east side.
Its 44 km coastline holds more than 60 beaches, most of them sandy. Two are worth planning around: - Lalaria, on the north-east coast: white cobbles below the Trypia Petra rock arch, reachable only by sea and only in dead calm. Taking cobbles away is strictly forbidden. - Koukounaries, on the south-west coast about 16 km from town, where a stone-pine forest lies between a lagoon and the sea.
The islet of Tsougrias sits a few kilometres off the south-east coast. Further east come Skopelos, with harbours at Skopelos town, Loutraki and Agnontas, and then Alonissos. Alonissos is the heart of Greece's first marine park, created in 1992 for the monk seal, which lives near the islet of Planitis, north of Alonissos. Entering its zone A needs special permission from the park's management body, and spear-gun diving and open fires are banned.
From mid-May to mid-September the meltemi blows from the north-east to north across the northern Aegean. It can reach force 7–8, is strongest in the afternoon and often dies down at night. A full week through all three islands is mapped out in our Sporades itinerary.
