What is Ship O’Hoi?
Skopelos: sailing from Neo Klima
Most yachts on Skopelos are not in the main town but on the quieter west coast, at the new marina of Neo Klima, also called Elios. The village lies about 18 km by road from Chora and was built after the 1965 earthquake. It has a sandy beach at Hovolo and faces the sunset. A sailing yacht and a gulet are based in Skopelos town harbour itself. Monohull sailing yachts, mostly let by the week, dominate the list.
From Neo Klima, Skiathos lies a few miles to the west. Along the coast are sheltered bays such as Panormos on the west side, where Blo is a safe anchorage, and Agnontas in the south. Alonissos, the next island east, is the centre of a marine park dating from 1992, whose main purpose is protecting the Mediterranean monk seal. A week in the Sporades covers all three islands.
In the marine park, keep to 10 knots within half a mile of its zone-A islands, and stay more than 3 miles from Piperi. On the island itself, a strong northerly can close the Chora harbour, while Agnontas, Panormos and Staphylos give better shelter. The municipality notes that the meltemi blows more gently here than in much of the Aegean.
