Once through the Trikeri channel, the Sporades open up: Skiathos first, then Skopelos and Alonissos. Distances between the islands are short, so there is time for swimming stops every day.
A week in the Sporades
A typical week runs Volos – Pelion coast – Skiathos – Skopelos – Alonissos and back. Alonissos is home to the National Marine Park of Alonissos and the Northern Sporades, one of the last refuges of the Mediterranean monk seal. Anchoring and fishing rules apply in the park, so check them before you go.
Wind and season
The Sporades lie further from the meltemi's strongest belt than the Cyclades, and the gulf is sheltered. The season runs from April to October; June and September are the pleasant, quieter months.
Getting there and booking
Volos has a small airport at Nea Anchialos with summer flights. Most visitors fly into Athens or Thessaloniki and continue by car or bus. Most boats are chartered by the week, Saturday to Saturday.
