Renting a boat in Thessaloniki: questions and answers

How many people can come along on a rental boat in Thessaloniki?

The largest boat here takes up to 10 people, and a typical boat takes 8.

Do I need a boat licence in Greece?

Not for a small motorboat: in Greece an outboard of up to 30 hp is licence-free on a conventional hull, but only up to 15 hp on a RIB or V-hull. To charter a yacht bareboat the skipper needs a recognised licence, and the ICC is the safest choice; with a hired skipper nobody on board needs one. Read our full licence guide.

Chartering from Thessaloniki on the Thermaic Gulf

Thessaloniki lies at the north-eastern tip of the Thermaic Gulf. The yachts are listed at the Thessaloniki charter base with no marina name, so check the exact berth with the charter company. Expect sailing yachts for a week, such as a larger yacht with three double cabins and a bow thruster, or a smaller one that can be taken bareboat or with a skipper.

The gulf is about 100 km long, with the Chalkidiki peninsula on its eastern side and Cape Kassandra at the south-east corner. Our Halkidiki sailing guide follows Sithonia's coves and the Mount Athos coast. On a clear day Mount Olympus can be seen from the upper parts of the city, about 100 km away across the gulf.

Skip the north-west shore for swimming: rivers are silting up the north and west of the gulf, and that coast has wetlands, not beaches.
