Volda on the deepest fjord in Sunnmøre
Volda, the municipal centre and a college town, lies on the north-east side of the Voldsfjord. The fjord is about 18 km long, or 29 km to the head of Austefjorden. At 697 m near Voldshammaren it is the deepest fjord in Sunnmøre. Further in it divides, with Kilsfjorden heading south-west and Austefjorden east, and Dalsfjorden branches off to the south about halfway in.
In town you can pick up a diesel day cruiser for up to six. Its owner also hires out fishing gear, a tube and wetsuits, and can bring the boat to you by arrangement. The page also shows a small open boat moored at Eiksund in Ulstein, at the other end of the undersea tunnel.
Keep a lookout for car ferries. From the centre of Volda they cross the fjord to Lauvstad and to Folkestad on the west side.
