Renting a boat in Ulstein: a small open boat at Eiksund
Ulstein covers the western half of Hareidlandet, the island of Dimna, Eika to the south and a scatter of smaller islands to the west. Eiksund and Eika were moved from Herøy to Ulstein in 1964.
The listed boat, a four-seat open boat of 14 ft, is moored in a harbour at Havåg in Eiksund, right beside a cabin of the Norwegian Trekking Association. Its owner suggests a trip around Eiksund.
The islands have a long past: under the water of Dimnasund lies a settlement site dated to between 9,300 and 10,600 years old. At the northern end of the municipality, Grasøyane in Rundafjorden are protected for their birdlife. The fjord between Hareidlandet and Gurskøya, around Dimna, is narrow and hard to read, so take a chart. For longer runs, island hopping on the Ålesund coast covers Ulsteinvik's guest harbour and the bird cliffs of Runde.
