Herøy, the island municipality with Runde
Herøy on Sunnmøre lies entirely on islands, among them Bergsøy, Leinøy, Nerlandsøy, Remøy, Runde and part of Gurskøy, all linked by bridges. Its centre, Fosnavåg, became a town in 2000. Our Ålesund coast guide puts Fosnavåg about 25 nautical miles south of Ålesund and lists its guest harbour.

Runde, reached by bridge from Remøy since 1982, is known for its bird cliff. Some 100,000 seabirds nest on the cliffs of its west side, among them puffins, gannets, razorbills and guillemots, although numbers have fallen sharply over the past 40 years. Runde lighthouse on Kvalneset, at the island's north-west tip, was built in 1767, one of the first in Norway. Treasure hunters still come looking for gold and silver coins from the Akerendam, wrecked off the island in the 18th century.
