Tysnes: an island municipality at the mouth of the Hardangerfjord
Tysnes is a group of islands at the outer end of the Hardangerfjord. Tysnesøya, 199 km² and rising to 752 m at Tysnessåta, is by far the largest, with Reksteren, Skorpo and the Godøyene also inhabited. Kept on the island are a small landstedsbåt for trips and fishing and an open boat with an echo sounder. The others are on the Bjørnafjorden side, in Os and Baldersheim, and in Bergen.
Langenuen, a 35 km sound, runs along the west side towards Stord and Austevoll, with Bjørnafjorden to the north and Onarheimsfjorden to the east. Before Christianity the island was called Njarðarlǫg, after Njord, god of seafaring.
Våge, the largest village, has the ferry to Halhjem, so expect car ferries in and out. Tysnes has set a 5-knot limit for leisure boats within 250 m of land between the Våge ferry quay and Notaneset.
