Tjøtta on the Helgeland coast
Tjøtta is a flat island of 11.3 km² in Alstahaug on the Helgeland coast, west of the mouth of the Vefsnfjorden; its highest point, Kruno, is only 77 m above the sea. Small boats based here include a light aluminium boat with a 20 hp outboard, whose owner suggests touring the islands around Tjøtta and camping, and a RIB with a 32 hp outboard. Another is a catamaran from Mosjøen that its owner offers from Sandnessjøen.
The small-boat harbour on Tjøtta is owned and run by the boat club Tjøtta Småbåtforening. Tjøtta is also a ferry port on the Kystriksveien (Rv 17), with ferries to Forvik in Vevelstad and several smaller stops, so keep clear of the ferry berth. Ashore stand the stone church from 1851 and, at Nordøya, the Soviet and international war cemeteries with more than 7,500 graves of Russian prisoners of war.
