Renting a boat in Sandnessjøen: a catamaran for midsummer

Sandnessjøen is the town of Alstahaug municipality on the island of Alsten, and the trading and transport hub of outer Helgeland. Its name joins the Sandnes farm, "the sandy headland", with Sandnesvågen, the bay below it, whose easy landing drew boat traffic early on; Egil's saga places the chieftain Torolv Kveldulvsson at Sandnes in the late 800s.

A sailing catamaran appears on this page, but its map pin is at Vistvågen on the Vefsnfjorden, in Vefsn near Mosjøen. Its owner offers it from Sandnessjøen for two weeks at the turn of June and July, so check the dates first.

Expect traffic in the harbour: the Hurtigruten calls every day, fast ferries run out to the islands of the region, and the Nordlandsekspressen ends its route here. Each May the town holds a boat and leisure fair on the waterfront. The Norwegian Food Safety Authority warns against eating blue mussels picked in the harbour between the oil base at Holmen and Sandnesvågen.
