Renting a boat in Leirfjord: towards Dønna, Herøy and Vega
Leirfjord is a municipality on the Helgeland coast in Nordland, on the mainland opposite the island of Alsten. The Helgelandsbrua, a 1,065 m cable-stayed bridge, crosses the Leirfjorden to Alsten and Sandnessjøen, and the Sundøybrua gives Sundøya on Alsten its own road link to the Leirfjord side.
A small pilothouse fishing boat with a diesel cabin heater is based here. On longer hires its owner is happy for it to go out to Herøy, Dønna and Vega; the owner asks for the Norwegian boat licence test, and fuel is not included.
West of Leirfjord, Dønna has a large archipelago of low islands, holms and skerries, where the shallow sea has traditionally held plenty of fish. Further south-west lie the Vega islands, a 1,072 km² landscape of islands and skerries that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004.
