Omnøya: Åmøya, Meløy's largest island
Omnøya here refers to Åmøya, also written Åmnøya, the largest island in Meløy at 23.4 km², lying between Skarsfjorden and the Bolgfjorden and Meløyfjorden. About a hundred people live there, most of them at Åmøyhamna and Åmnes, and a road reaches the mainland by bridges via Grønøy, Hestøya and Storøya. A 24 ft fishing boat with VHF, echo sounder and chart plotter is kept on the island, with fuel included; the other boats are elsewhere in Meløy.
The island is rocky, with little flat land along the shore. A low isthmus crosses it from north to south, mostly filled by Skarsvatnet, the largest lake, which has a bathing beach. In Åmnessundet, 12 fields of rock carvings are spread over an area of about 90 by 40 m, and the highest peak, Risnestinden, reaches 648 m. East of the island, Skarsfjorden leads on into the Holandsfjorden.
