Sola: sand beaches, Hafrsfjord and a seabird reserve
Sola is the mostly flat farming municipality around Stavanger airport, with Hafrsfjord to the north and the North Sea to the west. Listed under Sola is a small freshwater rowing boat whose owner keeps it off the sea. For salt water, collect a boat in Tananger, Sola's harbour town, or head into Stavanger, Sandnes, Hundvåg or Vassøy.
Sola's shore is mostly sand. Solastranden runs 2.3 km beside the airport and belongs to the Jærstrendene protected landscape, which continues south to the Klepp border. Hafrsfjord is only a few hundred metres wide at its mouth by Kvernevik and opens up inside, around small islands such as Hagøyna, Prestøy and Sømsøy. For longer outings, see our half-day routes from Stavanger.
Keep your distance from Kjørholmane, the island group south-west of Rott. It is a seabird reserve, and from 15 April to 1 August landing and all traffic on the islets and within 50 m of them are banned.
