Sjernarøy: bridged islands in the Boknafjord
Sjernarøy is a group of islands in the northern Boknafjord, between the Nedstrandsfjorden to the north and the Finnøyfjorden to the south, and part of Stavanger municipality since 2020. Boats kept here include a 15 ft open boat with electric start and echo sounder, and a sturdy 15 ft boat with two lockable storage compartments. Another is on the mainland in Hjelmeland.
The largest islands are Kyrkjøy and Bjergøy in the north and Talgje, Helgøy and Hidle in the south. Bjergøy is linked to Aubø by bridge, and further bridges run to Eriksholmen, Kyrkjøy, Tjul, Nord-Talgje and Helgøy; Nord-Hidle is the only one without a bridge. On Kyrkjøy stands Sjernarøy church, a timbered long church from 1647. The Riksantikvaren has proposed the islands as a cultural landscape of national interest for their old quays, trading posts and boathouses.
