Hjelmeland, at the mouth of the Jøsenfjord
Hjelmeland, or Hjelmelandsvågen, is the centre of Hjelmeland municipality in Ryfylke. It is an old waterfront village on the south side of the mouth of the Jøsenfjord, which runs 24 km inland between walls that rise almost vertically to more than 700 m. A 15-foot open boat with a 25 hp engine is kept here, and its owner can come along as skipper. Other small open boats are out on Sjernarøyane to the west, one with an echo sounder.
Sjernarøyane, now part of Stavanger, has eight inhabited islands, all but Nord-Hidle linked by bridges, and walking trails on most of them. Ombo, the largest island in Ryfylke, lies in between. Our Stavanger by boat guide covers the Ryfylke islands further south.
