Renting a boat in Salo on Halikonlahti

Salo grew up where the Great Coastal Road crossed the Salo river, and the river was the town's fairway to the sea. Below the town it opens into Halikonlahti, a narrow bay about 40 km long that reaches the Archipelago Sea on both sides of Kimitoön, through the straits of Kemiönvirta and Sandönvirta.

A small motorboat with a chart plotter, echo sounder and a four-stroke outboard is listed for Salo. Its map pin is at Kokkila in Halikko, down the bay from the town, where the city also has boat berths. In the centre, the city keeps a short-stay guest jetty on the Salonjoki, below the kiosk just before the Salonsilta bridge.

The bay is shallow, especially at its head, and its nutrient-rich water has made it an important bird area. Heading south towards the outer islands, our Kimitoön guide continues to Kasnäs and the Archipelago National Park.
