A RIB at the southern tip of Finland
Hanko sits at the southernmost point of mainland Finland, with the open Baltic on one side and the sheltered Raasepori archipelago on the other. A new 15 ft RIB with a two-person saddle seat is let here; its owner says the 50 hp outboard copes even with a heavier load.
Two short trips suit a small boat. Hauensuoli, a narrow, winding strait between two islets off the Tulliniemi headland, has names, coats of arms and house marks carved into its rocks since the Middle Ages by sailors waiting for fair weather. Anchoring is prohibited there, and you may land only at the pier. Gunnarsörarna, north-west of Tulliniemi, has a pier, a lean-to and a trail past a wartime anti-aircraft battery.
South of the headland there are no islands to shelter you, so check the wind before rounding the tip. Our Hanko and Raasepori guide has five routes.
