Parainen, Pargas in Swedish, is one of only two Finnish towns entirely surrounded by water. Since the 2009 merger it also takes in Nauvo, Korppoo, Houtskari and Iniö, which gives it the largest sea area of any Finnish municipality, about 4,650 km².

Further out, the Archipelago National Park covers much of the outer archipelago south of Korppoo and Nauvo. To protect nesting birds, landing on some of its islands is forbidden from April to July.
