Best Archipelagos in Finland for Boaters
Best Archipelagos in Finland for Boaters
Finland has one of the world's most impressive archipelagos. With over 80,000 islands along the coast – plus countless lake islands – it's a paradise for anyone who loves navigating between islets and straits. Here we present the four best archipelago areas for boaters.
The Archipelago Sea (Saaristomeri) – The World's Densest Archipelago
Between Turku and Åland lies the Archipelago Sea, officially the world's densest archipelago. Over 50,000 islands, islets, and skerries are packed into a relatively small area. UNESCO has recognised the Archipelago Sea as a biosphere area due to its unique natural and cultural landscape.
For boaters, this is an adventure land. Navigation is challenging, with narrow straits, shallows, and currents, but the rewards are enormous. Every bay hides something new – an old fishing village, a lonely islet with berry bushes, or a welcoming guest harbour with smoked fish and cold beer.
Key stops: Nagu, Korpo, Houtskär, Iniö, Pargas.
Turku Archipelago – The Historical Gateway
The Turku archipelago is the eastern part of the Archipelago Sea and the most accessible starting point. From Turku guest harbour, you can sail straight out among the islands. Turku is Finland's oldest city, and the archipelago reflects centuries of seafaring, fishing, and island life.
The Archipelago Trail: The famous trail is a 250 km route through the archipelago combining roads, bridges, and ferries. By boat, you can follow the route at your own pace and stop wherever you like.
Recommended stops: Nagu guest harbour (charming, good restaurant), Seili (historic hospital island with museum), Jurmo (the outermost inhabited island).
Åland Archipelago
Åland is an autonomous island region with over 6,500 islands. Located between Finland and Sweden, Åland offers a unique blend of Finnish and Swedish culture with a lively maritime scene and welcoming harbours.
Mariehamn, the capital, is an excellent starting point. From here, you can sail to idyllic fishing communities, visit the maritime museum (with the museum ship Pommern), or navigate through the narrow straits of the eastern archipelago.
Tip: Åland has duty-free status, making shopping for certain goods particularly advantageous.
Helsinki Archipelago
Helsinki's archipelago is more compact than the others but compensates with accessibility. From the centre of the capital, you're among the islands in under 20 minutes. Suomenlinna, Pihlajasaari, Vallisaari, and Lonna are all within easy reach.
The outer archipelago – Isosaari, Krokö, and further out – offers wilder nature and fewer people. For a day trip from a major city, it's hard to beat.
Comparison
Archipelago | Number of islands | Distance from city | Difficulty | Best for

Turku | Part of above | 0 km | Medium | Day and weekend trips
Åland | 6,500+ | From Turku/Stockholm | Easy–medium | Longer cruises
Helsinki | 300+ | 0 km | Easy | Day trips
