Renting a boat in Östergötland: Lake Vättern from Hästholmen
Östergötland reaches from the east shore of Lake Vättern to the Baltic, and the Göta Canal crosses the county, meeting Vättern at Motala. A diesel cabin boat is listed here, based in Hästholmens hamn near Ödeshög. It sleeps a family, and its owner suggests Vättern or a trip into the Göta Canal; canal and lock tickets are booked and paid by the renter.
Hästholmen's bay is one of the few sheltered ones on Vättern's east side. The harbour has guest berths, a heated slipway, a fish-cleaning house and a bathing beach, and to the north the steep slopes of Omberg rise from the lake. Hjo lies across the water; the steamer Trafik was built in 1892 for that very crossing.
Vättern is deep and exposed, and sudden westerly winds can take it from calm to storm with high waves. For the county's Baltic coast, see our Gryt archipelago guide.
