Renting a boat in Värmland: the Kristinehamn archipelago on Vänern
Värmland's shore of Vänern faces Värmlandssjön, the eastern and larger of the lake's two basins. Its deepest measured point, 106 m, lies 24 km south of Karlstad, and cargo ships still call at Karlstad, Skoghall and Kristinehamn, so keep an eye out for them in the fairways.
Listed here is a 16 ft day cruiser for up to five with rod holders, a bathing ladder, a canopy and an echo sounder, and its four-stroke outboard has a trolling mode. It is kept at Hjälmarsnäs, south-west of Kristinehamn, on the road out to Vålösundet. There, 7 km from the town centre, stands the 15 m Picasso sculpture, a concrete head of Jacqueline Picasso that Carl Nesjar made from Picasso's model in 1965.
In the Värmland archipelago, bird sanctuaries are closed to landing from 1 April to 31 July. Our Lake Vänern guide has more routes and rules.
