Mariestad and Sweden's largest inland archipelago
Mariestad was founded in 1583 by Duke Karl, later King Karl IX, and named after his wife Maria. The town lies on Vänern where the river Tidan runs out. The town is surrounded by Sweden's largest inland archipelago, whose biggest islands are Torsö, Fågelö and Brommö. About 20 km away by road, Sjötorp marks the western end of the Göta Canal, where it enters Vänern, and still has the dry dock from its shipbuilding years. In town, a cycle bridge links the guest harbour to the Smedjehagen district at the mouth of the Tidan.
