Västra Götaland's side of Lake Vänern
Västra Götaland is best known for its west coast, but the boats on this page are inland, in Mariestad on the south-east shore of Vänern, the EU's largest lake. They are cabin cruisers moored in the town, among them a flybridge cruiser with six berths for a longer lake holiday.
About 15 nautical miles out, in the middle of the lake, lies Djurö National Park: some thirty islands and skerries. The rules come from the County Administrative Board of Västra Götaland: - no more than 7 knots within 100 m of the shore - no mooring in the same place for more than two days in a row - bird sanctuaries closed from 1 April to 31 July - fishing with hand tackle only
Approach from the north or west, as the east side is shallow. On the way you pass Kinnekulle, a flat-topped mountain rising 263 m above the lake south-west of Mariestad. More routes are in our Lake Vänern guide.
