Namsos, at the head of Namsenfjorden

The town of Namsos lies at the head of Namsenfjorden, where the salmon river Namsen reaches the sea. The fjord is about 42 km long, and as far as the town most of it runs along the south-west side of Otterøya; the channels on the island's north-east side are traditionally called Nord-Namsen. The municipality also takes in the islands of Hoddøya, Elvalandet and Jøa.

A sailing yacht is berthed at Vemundvik, the former municipality north and east of the town. It is let by the week, preferably for two or three weeks, to experienced crews, and its owner suggests heading north along the Namdal coast to Flatanger, Jøa, Nordøyan, Sør-Gjæslingan and Leka before the Helgeland coast. Sør-Gjæslingan, at the outer end of Foldafjorden, is an abandoned fishing village spread over about 80 islands, islets and skerries, now a protected cultural environment.
