Moelv and the castle island of Steinsholmen
Moelv is a town in Ringsaker at the mouth of the Moelva, on the east shore of Mjøsa near the lake's narrow northern end. No boats are listed in Moelv itself. The nearest are further south in Ringsaker, a snekke kept at Brumunddal and a sonar-equipped fishing boat, and a diesel launch waits across the lake in Gjøvik.
Moelv has its own pier for the paddle steamer Skibladner, beside Spritbua from 1880. Three kilometres south of the town lies Steinsholmen, a small rocky island with the ruins of Mjøskastellet, the tower castle of King Håkon Håkonsson, first mentioned in 1234, and the largest medieval tower building in Norway. The island is part of Steinsodden nature reserve, whose shallows are important for wetland birds; in early spring, when the lake is low, you can walk out to it dry-shod. Our Lake Mjøsa guide describes the route from Moelv under Mjøsbrua to Lillehammer.
