Hamar's harbour and Åkersvika

Kept in Hamar are a small RIB for three, a large RIB for up to twelve and a pontoon boat, also for twelve. More are north of the town in Ringsaker. Hamar's harbour, which had a ferry to Kapp on the opposite shore from 1951 to 1979, is now used by private boats and, in summer, by the paddle steamer Skibladner at the Skibladner pier. Domkirkeodden, the headland with the ruins of the medieval cathedral, is also part of the town's shoreline.

Åkersvika, the bay between Hamar and Stange, became Norway's first Ramsar wetland in 1975. Motorboats are banned there all year inside the Dovrebanen railway bridge, and outside it from 1 April to 31 May; in the same spring weeks rowing boats and canoes are also kept out inside the bridge.

Mjøsa is a regulated reservoir, with about 3.6 m between its lowest and highest regulated levels. In winter it is drawn down so far that most small-boat harbours cannot be used until the spring flood. Our Lake Mjøsa guide includes short trips along the Hamar waterfront.
