Gjøvik, Skibladner's home port on Mjøsa

Gjøvik lies on Mjøsa's western shore, where the Hunnselva enters the lake, about 20 km across the water from Hamar and 45 km south of Lillehammer. A 24-foot motor launch with a cabin, a berth and a diesel engine is kept here, and its owner can come along as skipper. Other boats are across the lake in Ringsaker: a classic snekke fitted for overnight trips, and a trolling boat with a skipper available.

Gjøvik is the home port of the paddle steamer Skibladner, in service since 1856 and still steaming at about 12 knots. It spends the winter under a glass-covered shelter in the town and sails from May to September, with timetabled trips from late June to mid-August. Near the shore the lake has a 5-knot limit for leisure boats, out to 100 m. Route and charter vessels, Skibladner among them, are exempt from it, so give the steamer room when it comes in to the quays.
