Lierstranda and the head of the Drammensfjord

Lierstranda is the built-up shore between Brakerøya and Amtmandsvingen where the Drammensfjord ends, on the edge of Drammen. The local boat club, Lier Båtforening, has its harbour on the Drammen side of the timber terminal, with 106 berths on four piers. Lier and Drammen plan to turn the shore into Fjordbyen, a new fjord district, but the plan is still being consulted on.

To get afloat you head down the fjord: Svelvik has several of the listed boats, and others wait in Drammen, Slependen, Slemmestad, Vettre and Nesøya.

Opposite the timber terminal is Gilhusodden, a popular swimming point where the Lierelva reaches the fjord. Inside Svelvik the fjord is brackish and up to 123 m deep. To reach the open Oslofjord you pass Svelvikstrømmen, a strait about 200 m wide where the outgoing current can run at 5 knots and large ships head for Drammen harbour. Leisure craft passing through are capped at 8 knots. The boating season runs roughly May to September.
