Renting a boat in Kviteseid: the lock-free upper Telemark Canal

Kviteseid wraps around Kviteseidvatnet in Øvre Telemark, one of the lakes on the Bandak–Norsjø canal, the upper part of the Telemark Canal. The RIB listed here comes with a skipper and lies on Flåvatn, joined to Kviteseidvatnet by the short Fjågesundstraumen.

Flåvatn, Kviteseidvatnet and Bandak are regulated as one reservoir and usually sit at the same level, so you can run west all the way to Dalen without a single lock. In the other direction, Hogga locks at the outlet of Flåvatn take boats down 7 m in two chambers towards Norsjø and Ulefoss.

The limit is 5 knots in harbours and marked channels, and the swing bridge over Sundkilen by Kviteseid centre has 4 m clearance and opens on signal only 09:00–11:00 and 16:00–18:00 in season. Our Grenland guide covers the lower end of the canal from Skien.
