Renting a boat in Rauland: mountain lakes in Vinje

Rauland is a mountain village in Vinje, in upper Telemark, and merged into Vinje in 1964. Its centre, Krossen, has shops, a tourist office and a petrol station.

A 15 ft aluminium open boat is listed here, powered by a 40 hp engine and seating four to six. It comes on a trailer, and the owner suggests day trips on the local lakes: Totak, Songa, Møsvatn and Bitdal. Totak is one of Norway's deepest lakes, Møsvatn is Telemark's largest, and Songavatn drains into Totak through the river Songa.

Totak, Møsvatn and Songavatn are all regulated for hydropower, and the level of Songavatn can vary by up to 35 m, so shorelines and landing spots change through the season. At Sporaneset, at the eastern end of Totak, there is a large field of rock carvings from the Stone and Bronze Ages.
